Construction season has returned to southeast Saskatchewan, and projects both large and small are beginning to start, or pick up where they left off.

One major piece of work that is being resumed is the twinning of Highway 39 between Estevan and Bienfait. Steve Shaheen with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure looks back on how far it has come.

"By last fall we had completed the embankments for the new two lane overpass and subgrade, and a large portion of the twinning. There haven't been a lot of changes since then, other than the pouring of concrete for the bridge piers."

"This year, we expect to complete the remaining subgrade of the twinning, the bridge, the new two-lane overpass, the realignment of the junction of Highways 39 and 18, and all surfacing and asphalt paving work," he revealed.

"Weather permitting, the project is on schedule to be fully opened to traffic late this year."

He shared a note of caution for motorists when they are driving in the vicinity.

"If there is workers in the area, slow down. Certainly pay attention to any signs, and abide by the speed limits that are posted."

The law dictates that vehicles are to slow to 60 kilometers per hour when travelling through a construction zone.
