It was a record-breaking day in Weyburn Saturday.

The temperature soared to 40.9 degrees, the hottest day recorded for August in Weyburn. It was also the hottest August 11 in recorded history, which began for Weyburn in 1953. The last record set for August 11 was in 1984 at 36.5 degrees.

Alysa Pederson is a meteorologist with Environment Canada. She said the heat wave is due to a large scale upper ridge.

"So, what that does is it funnels in a lot of warm air from the States and keeps skies very clear so that the sun can actually reach the ground and help heat the air up," explained Pederson.

Pederson said a large low-pressure system is expected to move in Monday to cool things down. In the meantime, today is expected to be even hotter than yesterday.
