In recent weeks, Weyburn has seen upwards of 160 mm of rainfall.

In just one month, the city has gone from too little water at Nickle Lake to wondering if flood risks are to be expected.

According to Patrick Boyle with the Water Security Agency, Nickle Lake has now reached its full supply level.

“Significant rainfalls have helped that out a little bit,” he said, adding that there is no way of predicting whether Weyburn will see flooding like in 2011 since each year is different from the next in terms of the status of the watershed.

“The basin is quite wet right now, so anytime that happens, what you get is storage on the landscape fills up,” explained Boyle. “When that fills up, any more rainfall events from here on out, you’re gonna see water come off very quickly, and then that’s where you kind of see those roads getting washed out in certain areas that have issues as far as flooding.”
