A campaign started by the Weyburn Police Service is seeing results.

"Since the beginning of the 'This Ride's on Us' Campaign which was about September 2nd, we have had a total 92 people formally participate in that," explained Rod Stafford, Deputy Chief, Weyburn Police Service.

Drivers who have had too much to drink can leave keys at the Bar or restaurant and have a free taxi ride home in Weyburn in participating businesses. For a fee, their vehicle can be driven home by someone else too.

Stafford commends everyone who has talked about the program or taken part because they have seen a notable drop in charges from year to year.

"From September 2016 to February 8th, 2017, one year ago, we had laid 15 impaired driving charges or drinking driving charges of all manner. In the same period from the beginning of the program, September 2017 till today's date, we've laid eight charges."

This is almost half the amount of charges.

"It's phenomenal results. We had hoped really for the conversation to be present, always, of course, hoping for some reduction but I don't think that we had anticipated the wholesale reduction in offences we have seen or the uptake on the program."

Around Christmas, the WPS had groups asking to be part of the 'This Ride's on Us' program including staff parties or weddings where a liquor license had been issued. These were included in the program.

Stafford said there has also been an increase in police presence on the roads which is likely to have had a part to play in reducing charges.

'This Ride's on Us' has been extended to run until June.
