As Weyburn continues to grow the city has become a popular choice for developers.

The latest proposal to the City is from Nicor Developments Inc., a Regina-based property developer. The company is interested in developing a multi-phase residential development on a 50-acre site in the Souris Valley grounds.

“I don’t need to tell anyone who lives here that there is a lot of growth and activity going on in Weyburn these days. From a development perspective, we see Weyburn as a very exciting place to be,” says Ross Keith, Nicor’s President.

“We have had positive discussions with the City and understand the pressing housing need created by Weyburn’s recent growth. Our proposal to purchase the site is being deliberated by City Council on January 23 and we hope for a favourable outcome. In any case, we are committed to exploring opportunities in Weyburn for the long term.”

Keith says that Nicor is aware of local concerns about the natural park-like setting, heritage and history of the site and we will work closely with the City to develop a new community that will appropriately integrate them.

“Our company is proud to have won awards for our progressive approach to managing the heritage and environmental concerns of property development. We believe in being accountable and transparent in everything we do. We have a carefully-considered plan for our proposed Weyburn development. In the near future, we will be holding public meetings to share these plans, gather feedback and answer questions.”

Keith promised that, if the development is approved, Nicor will work closely with City officials to ensure development of beautiful new subdivision. He says Nicor is aware of Weyburn’s need for a mixed residential development and will be able to offer residents multiple options of single family homes, and affordable housing including townhouse type products as well as apartment rental opportunities.

“The way we see it, we’re not just building homes, we are joining a community. We plan to be part of Weyburn’s bright future and hope that City Council in particular and the people of Weyburn in general take a positive view of our proposal.”

Mayor Debra Button says that they are very happy to have developers looking into the City of Weyburn, especially a successful developer like Nicor.

She says that as Weyburn grows, they recognize that the City will not be able to keep up to the housing needs and demands on their own and will have to rely on private development like this more often.
