They're low to the ground, built to minimize the effects of wind, but somehow that doesn't seem to make daschunds any faster.

Just how fast, will be put to the test once again this coming weekend.

Saturday will see Weyburn's annual wiener dog race.

The event is sponsored by Pet Value, with proceeds going to Prairie Sky Dog Rescue. "Prairie Sky Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization, and we are foster-based." said organizer, Georgia Sirounis. "So, dogs aren't in shelters. They come to our homes, we take care of them, and then adopt them out after a very intense application system, interview, home check, that sort of thing"

Sirounis has served as a foster 'parent' for dogs, but one in particular captured her heart. "In my time, I've rescued about 8, and kept one." she told Discover Weyburn. "It's rewarding. He is a mastif mix of some sort, we think maybe boxer in there."

Saturday's race will feature more than just wiener dogs, but many consider theirs to be the prize event.

The fun begins at 2:00 PM at the Weyburn City Centre Mall.
