Curbside recycling was launched in Weyburn in the first week of July 2017. The stats for the first six months of the program collected by the City of Weyburn show how much waste has been saved from the city landfill.

"Recycling seems to be quite successful so far. On average the tonnage for pick up has been 23.7 tons per month," explained Laura Delanoy, Assistant City Engineer, City of Weyburn.

"Over the six month period, we've seen 141 tons of waste materials recycled through the curbside recycling program, which is awesome."

"There has been a significant reduction in household waste reaching the landfill. So if we compare 2016 with 2017 we've seen a reduction from 2430 tons to 770 tons this year so there has been a significant reduction that can be tied to the curbside recycling program," adds Delanoy.

The city is hoping to see a 40% reduction in the landfill over the year to expand the length of time the landfill can support Weyburn. Delanoy said if people continue to divert waste we should be able to see that number.

The Christmas season was a busier time for the recycling program.

"We did see the highest recycling values in December."

The city mailed out landfill coupons earlier than normal in order to help households in Weyburn with waste disposal due to the bi-weekly refuse pickup.

Delanoy said it will be interesting to see how people will be using their landfill coupons.

"Usually we don't put them out till early spring and then people often use them for their yard waste."
