A reminder from the Weyburn Police Service that fireworks are not allowed in the city limits.

Some people were concerned when they heard what appeared to be gunshots in the vicinity of 8th Avenue South around 11:00 AM on February 15th.

When police investigated, they found what appeared to be spent fireworks in the same area.

"It creates some angst among the people, because often if there's one or even two or three in succession, they can sound an awful lot like gunshots." Police Inspector Rod Stafford told Discover Weyburn. "And that puts people in an area on alert."

"And we do know from the summer of last year, that we did have an incident late at night, where there were actual gunshots in the city, and it's just not a good thing because it gets people feeling very uneasy." the Inspector added.

In addition to alarming the public, Stafford pointed out another concern. "It's unsafe. You know, maybe not so much at this particular time of year where everything is wet, and that, but in the summer when grass is dry and leaves are dry, and you don't know where they are going to land, it can present quite a fire hazard."
