The City's decision to change to bi-weekly garbage collections has had some Weyburn residents concerned. The City advises that the decision was not made lightly.

"We had noticed a significant reduction in the amount of residential garbage that was being picked up weekly, and these numbers pointed to us that bi-weekly garbage could be introduced for six weeks in the winter time when numbers are at it's lowest," says City Manager Roy Hardy.

Hardy mentioned that these numbers were studied and it was found that the majority of residents could handle the change.

There is a marginal cost savings of about $13,000 a year. The City is trying to avoid costs in the longer term by putting less in the landfill, prolonging its life.

These 6 weeks will be used to determine whether this change can be continued and will be used a learning period to gather further information.

"As a result of seeing the amount of garbage for on average that has gone down and how much the recycling is growing, we looked at this and said this winter period is the best time to really get a sense of how garbage and recycling can be restructured," says Hardy.

The City has also discussed implementing a compost program in the future which would also impact the amount of garbage citizens are filling their bins with.

The City wants to remind everyone that they are constantly looking to the future to make Weyburn a productive and proactive City.

The City remains vigilant that it will help coordinate with households that have issues with the bi-weekly collection.
