Weyburn's residents are taking advantage of the nice weather to work on some 'do it yourself' renovations, though many may not be aware their project requires a permit.

"If you were looking at just doing some superficial remodeling inside your house, new kitchen cupboards, paint job, new trim; those things do not require building permits," said Amanda Kaufmann with the City of Weyburn. "We don't do building permits unless you're making any structural changes to a dwelling unit or creating new bedrooms and stuff which do have some requirements under the National Building Code."

While interior remodeling does not require a permit, building a new deck or stairs do.

"Lots of people are redoing their front steps, and their landings and their rear decks, and may not necessarily think that requires a permit, but it does. Because there's a lot of things in the building code that are required such as the joist size, and the beam, to ensure that the deck you build meets the minimum standards of the National Building Code," said Kaufmann.

She noted that anything under 100 square feet does not require a permit.
