It was a fairly light agenda for Weyburn City Council this week.

Mayor Debra Button is representing the city at a conference in Whistler, and was not present last night. In her absence, councillor Dick Michel presided over the meeting. Also absent were councillors Winston Bailey and Rob Stephanson, both of whom are on vacation.

With the light agenda, the meeting was over in roughly 30 minutes, but a lot of ground was covered. "It's probably because I'm co-chairing for the mayor that they did that for me, but I think things worked out pretty good," Michel said after the session wrapped up.

Among the issues discussed were reports from various boards and committees. The airport board discussed the improvements to the jet fuel system, a progress report on the GPS system for the airport, and an update on the action plan to bring the airport's safety management system into compliance with Transport Canada regulations.

The Arts Council presented notes from their last meeting, which included information about the James Weir gala on February 12th, the OSAC Comvention coming up in October, and the Curator's report.

Council also passed a request from the Weyburn Police Service for the purchase of a NICE radio and phone recorder. The request was to make the purchase before the passing of the budget, as there was an incentive available for the Police Service to make the purchase prior to January 31st.

Council also heard from police chief Marlo Pritchard on the Westray Bill. A presentation from the United Steelworkers Union back in December of last year was forwarded to him to research into the training and support that the police service receives in handling those investigations. Pritchard's report said that the officers are already trained in those investigations, and that the amendments to the Criminal Code contained in the Westray Bill are meant to compliment the existing Occupational Health and Safety legilation, not supplant it.

Council next meets on February 9th.
