City Council Looks On

Weyburn City Council is asking for public feedback on a proposed bylaw change concerning secondary suites.

As it stands right now, you cannot build a secondary suite in a duplex or semi-detached home in Weyburn. Riverwood Development Corporation would like to see a change to that bylaw.

"We thought a good opportunity exists here in Weyburn to test whether these things will actually work in the marketplace," said Gary Benson, Principal with Riverwood Development. "So, we've decided to go ahead and would like to build a duplex and see how well it works in the marketplace."

With the increased demand for housing Munir Haque, Development Manager for Riverwood, says overall the concept will have little impact, aside from increased housing.

"The increased density is minimal, in terms of we're adding one suite per house," Haque said. "As I put it, it'll be a little more demand on utilities, maybe one more car, maybe two more cars per house."

City council will be putting the matter to public hearings, scheduled to start July 21st.
