It is the time of year for many to string the lights, put up the wreath, and decorate the Christmas tree. This weekend will see many of the decorations going up if they haven’t been already.

Amongst all the hustle and bustle of the season, there are a few things the Weyburn Fire Department wants people to keep in mind when it comes to fire safety over the holidays.

“We want to be careful when people are plugging lights in, in regards to trees, especially natural trees, or real trees; make sure the tree is watered,” Fire Chief Simon Almond stressed. “I was watching an interesting video the other day about how fast a Christmas tree goes up.”

He added to make sure the natural tree is in a suitable basin for the tree to make sure it can be watered properly.

Candle use in the home is something else which Almond recommends people be cognizant about, and have a fire safety plan in place for the home. He also reminded people to be aware of where their decorations are in relation to open flames and light bulbs.
