As we cruise through the month of February, we also continue on with our Traffic Safety Spotlight.

With less than a week left SGI and local law enforcement progress with their efforts to remind drivers to use their seat belts and have an appropriate car seat or booster seat.

"It is the quickest, easiest thing you can do to protect yourself when you're in a motor vehicle," said Tyler McMurchy with SGI.

He also added that law enforcement have heard many excuses over the years for reasons that people feel justified in not wearing a seat belt.

"The idea that you're a good driver and you're not going to get into an accident. Let's assume you're the best driver in the world; are you going to make that assumption for every person on the road? What about the unexpected situations that happen? If a deer darts out at you or there's an icy patch of road?"

"The idea that you're in the back seat, that seat in front of you is not going to provide you any kind of protection in a sudden stop. In a collision, you're also a projectile within the cab of the car, and you're a danger to yourself and to other occupants if you're not wearing your seat belt."

McMurchy noted that it's a small portion of the population who are still not wearing their seat belt or have issues with car seats, but the number still needs to be lower.
