Weyburn's Souris School has been running a breakfast program since 2014.

"It's evolved into a full nutrition program for the students of Souris School," explains Shannon Seitz, Community Liaison, Souris School.

"We offer a free breakfast program for all students. So they come in and they get to sit around the table and visit. Our menu is based on the Canada food guide. We've worked around sun country health region to develop our programs."

"We also offer a lunch program so if there are any families who need extra support can contact the school and we provide free lunches for students."

The school also provides a supplemental lunch program to make sure that all students have access to the four food groups.

The program started based on the needs of the students.

There is now a baking program and families of students from the school can also get access to help with meal planning.

"It's really promoting the healthy foods and trying to manage a household on a budget," said Seitz.

"Souris School has 140 students and on average has 45 students who attend the breakfast program daily. We serve about 15 lunches a day and we do the supplemental snacks."

Seitz mentioned the increase in the need for the program.

The goal of the program for the school is to provide healthy food for the students and access to fresh fruits and vegetables daily.

The school goes through around 20 pounds of carrots a week.

They are looking for volunteers and encourage businesses and community members to contact the school directly.

"We do have a sponsorship package available, and I can be contacted at Souris school at 306-842-2721. We do take in-kind donations as well."

Souris School has partnered with the Salvation Army so if there is a need, they can get that from the food bank.
