With July coming to a close, the Weyburn Arts Council is preparing for the second month of their new initiative, Random Acts of Art. This initiative has the Arts Council hiding a random piece of art somewhere in the city for anyone to find. Whoever finds it gets to keep it.

The fun initiative was created after the pARTy on the Hill was canceled due to COVID-19 restricting group size and social distancing. It is a way to help promote local artists while providing a treat to whoever finds the hidden art.

"For a lot of us, art is kind of hand-to-mouth. If we aren't selling then we aren't creating," said City Curator, Regan Lanning. "We wanted to bring awareness to who our local creators are."

Lanning says the Arts Council will purchase a piece from a local artist and hide it, providing some free publicity while supporting the local artist.

For July, they hid a piece from Donn Morton. A copper sculpture of a happy pooch. Lanning says Morton frequently makes funky little statues, and they were happy to purchase and hide one of his pieces.

The piece was found last month, however, there is no knowledge as to who was the lucky individual who received the piece. The Arts Council is asking for anyone who happened to come across this piece to reach out to them and send some pictures so they can celebrate a successful first month of this new initiative.

"Take a photo of the piece you found so we can share your joy with our social media viewers," Lanning added.

At this time they don't know quite yet what they will be hiding, however, Lanning says that is part of the excitement for the arts council.
