The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings remain undefeated on home ice against Big Six opponents this season. They beat the Carnduff Red Devils in game one of the best-of-five Big Six Championship series 6-4 Wednesday night.

The Red Devils were the first to get on the board when Blake McMillen tallied for the road team just 48 seconds into the game. It wouldn’t take too long for the Wheat Kings to even things up, though.

Brad Riege scored two minutes later, firing a shot from the right wing side past Cody Dumaine. Braden Mellon was credited with the assist on the goal.

Yellow Grass would then take the lead just before the end of the period when Thomas Carleton scored with 1:47 remaining in the frame.

Nico Anderson would tie the game up 2-2 in the second period, as he put the puck past Tanner Erickson. The goal was assisted by Barrett Dumaine. Carnduff would then take the lead just past the halfway mark of the game as Cody Moore put a one-timer past Erickson. The goal was set up from a feed from Brandon Trask.

The Wheat Kings would again tie the score as Brendon Vertefeuille scored. He potted a rebound from a shot by Justin Richter to make it a 3-3 game.

Just four minutes into the third period, Tucker Neuberger put a shot from the slot through traffic into the net, giving the Wheat Kings a 4-3 lead. Then, Mike Onstad helped set up Drew Fellner for a goal to make it 5-3/

The Red Devils would pull their netminder, and get within a goal as Trevor Geiger scored with 1:37 left in the game. Yellow Grass, though, would score shortly after, as Justin Richter added an insurance goal into the empty net.

Game two of the series is scheduled for next Tuesday in Carnduff. Before the game can be played, though, the Red Devils continue their provincial playoffs. They will be taking on Wynyard at home. Carnduff leads the best-of-three series 1-0.
