The Weyburn Red Wings rallied back from a three-goal deficit but weren’t able to hold off the Melfort Mustangs in overtime, falling 5-4 in the extra period Saturday night. With the one point, the Wings kept pace with the Estevan Bruins, who remain four points up on the Wings for first in the Viterra Division. Weyburn, though, still has two games in hand.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead, as Carson Albrecht and Colin Schmidt scored within the first five minutes of the game. The lead was extended to 3-1 in the second period when Kalem Zary notched a short-handed goal for the Melfort.

Before the second period was over, the Wings got on the board. Dexter Robinson scored his seventh of the season on the power play, assisted by Landon Walters, with 42 seconds left in the frame.

The Mustangs restored their three-goal lead just six minutes into the third period when Andrew Thompson beat Liam McCloskey for his 12th of the year. Then, the Red Wings began to score in bunches.

The line of Ben Hiltz, Cole Woodliffe and Cade Kowalski, reunited after Woodliffe spent some time on the shelf before the Christmas break, lead the charge. Hiltz scored just before the halfway mark of the period, his 19th of the season, assisted by Woodliffe and Kowalski. Just six minutes later, the same line made if a 4-3 game, as Hiltz scored his second of the night, assisted by Kowalski and captain Mike Eskra.

With just under two minutes left, the Wings pulled McCloskey in favor of an extra attacker, and it paid off. Carson Scheschuk scored his second goal of the season, with Walters earning his second point of the night, tying the game up, and sending it to overtime.

In the extra period, though, Justin Ball scored for the Mustangs, giving them the win.

Weyburn is now off until Friday. They host the Kindersley Klippers for the final time this season at Crescent Point Place as the Wings continue their four-game homestand.
