Down a few men and playing their fourth game in five nights, the Weyburn Red Wings put forth a gutsy effort but in the end came up just short. They tied it late, but eventually fell 3–2 in overtime to the Nipawin Hawks.

Entering the game with just 11 forwards, the Wings would lose both Jacob Piller and Drew Anderson to injury throughout the game. Down to just nine forwards and 16 skaters for the third period, the Wings battled hard and erased the 2–1 deficit.

Cade Kowalski would score his second of the night with just 30 seconds left to even things up at two apiece. The tying goal came on the powerplay and with the empty net, with Eric Soar picking up his second assist in as many nights.

In the extra frame, Soar had a glorious chance to end it on a breakaway but was robbed by the glove hand of Declan Hobbs. Nipawin would go back the other way and Austen Flamen would bury the game-winner 1:49 into the 3-on-3 overtime.

It was a performance the Wings can be proud of, as they were able to battle adversity and pick up a single point on the night against a tough opponent. In fact, with the win the Hawks leapfrog Humboldt and Melfort for the most points in the SJHL with 43.

Also in the madness of the third period was a spark of energy coming from rookie defenceman Mkyllan Couture. The defenceman got into it behind the net with Nipawin’s Michael Makarenko and the two would end up shedding the mitts. Couture would undoubtedly win the fight, landing numerous hard rights on Makarenko and eventually knocking him to the ice.

It was the first fight of Couture’s career and it was an impressive one at that.

“The guy gave me a cross-check. We were down 2–1, so I thought I would try something to try and get the boys fired up,” Couture said postgame.

The Wings would of course tie it late. Although it was a loss, it felt like more of a win for the shorthanded Red Wings. With almost a week of in between games, it’s something they can hopefully build off moving forward.

“I thought we started it [the road trip] off a little slow, but we definitely ended it the way we wanted too. I think we are going in the right direction the rest of the season,” the defenceman said.

Riley Lamb made 27 saves on 30 shots with a number of unbelievable pad saves at different points in the game to keep the Wings alive. Weyburn was just the second team to score two goals against the Hawks in their last eight games.

The overtime loss runs the Red Wings record to 10–16–3, which gives them a three point cushion over the Melville Millionaires for the 10th and final playoff spot in the SJHL. The next action will be against the Mils when they visit Crescent Point Place on Thursday, December 6.
