Tucker Neuberger was the hero in double overtime Tuesday night.

He scored the game-winning goal in the fifth period of hockey between Yellow Grass Wheat Kings and the Carnduff Red Devils, as the Wheat Kings picked up a 3-2 double overtime victory. With the win, the Wheat Kings now lead the best of five Big Six Hockey League finals 2-0.

The Wheat Kings jumped out to an early lead in the game, when Troy Miller scored just 2:07 into the first period. He was assisted on the goal by Justin Richter and Brendon Vertefeuille. Carnduff would rally back and reply with a goal of their own five minutes later, as Devon Carriere found the twine behind Tanner Erickson. The assists on the equalizer went to Trevor Geiger and Sean Mulcahy.

The Wheat Kings would regain the lead in the second period when Devin Cobbold scored an unassisted marker with 11:48 left on the clock. Yellow Grass wouldn’t enjoy the lead for long, though, as the Red Devils tied things up again in short order.

Just 19 seconds after the goal from Cobbold, Sheldon Thompson scored for the Red Devils to tie the game back up. Nico Anderson and Mulcahy assisted on the tally.

In the third period, and the fourth period, Erickson, and Carnduff netminder Cody Dumaine were perfect. The two combined for 50 minutes of shutout hockey, and it looked as though it could be a long night for both teams.

It would be Neuberger’s goal just 50 seconds into the second overtime which would end the game, giving Yellow Grass the win.

The Wheat Kings will now look to complete the sweep when the series returns to Yellow Grass for game three on Thursday. The Wheat Kings are undefeated on home ice against Big Six opponents.

The puck drops on the game at 8:00 p.m.
