The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings entered game three of the Big Six Hockey League finals Thursday night with a chance to do something for the first time in team history: hoist the Lincoln Memorial Trophy. They were up 2-0 in the best of five series and had yet to lose on home ice this season against Big Six opponents.

The Wheat Kings came out on top in the game, beating the Carnduff Red Devils 5-4, and winning the league title.

The league’s leading scorer, Devin Cobbold, would open the scoring for Yellow Grass just 1:01 into the game. He took a feed from Tucker Neuberger and put it into the net behind Cody Dumaine, giving the Wheat Kings the early lead.

It was followed up by a goal from Mike Onstad, who tapped in a centring pass from Cobbold on the power play. Troy Miller would round out the scoring for Yellow Grass, sending the teams to the locker room with a 3-0 Wheat Kings lead after 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, Brandon Trask would get the Red Devils on the board when he potted his own rebound behind Yellow Grass netminder Tanner Erickson.

Onstad would restore the three-goal lead moments later with his second of the game. Then, Onstad would set up what would be the eventual game-winner, as he fed the puck to Neuberger in a play almost identical to the first goal of the game, and it was 5-1 Wheat Kings.

Down by four, the Red Devils worked to rally back. Tanner Reynolds would start the rally as he scored on a shot from the blueline to make it 5-2. Then, before the end of the second period, Cody Moore would make it 5-3, as his shot redirected in on a defender’s stick.

The Red Devils would continue the pressure in the third period.

Less than five minutes in, it paid off as Moore would put home a rebound to make it 5-4.

The Wheat Kings managed to stave off the attack of the Red Devils for the remaining 15 minutes and held on to win the game 5-4, and the series 3-0.
