The Weyburn Red Wings scored three unanswered goals in the third period, as they beat the Kindersley Klippers 6-4 Sunday night to clinch their best-of-five survivor series in three games straight. Ryan Rothenburger scored twice including the game winner, with Carson Rose adding two himself, in the win.

The Klippers were the first on the board, though, when Brandon Wagner scored his second of the postseason 2:48 into the game. The lead wouldn’t last the period, though, as Carson Rose scored his second of the postseason on a breakaway, set up with a great pass from Braden Mellon.

Weyburn would jump out to the lead in the second period, as Jake Wozney would beat Klippers netminder Nick Trenciansky, assisted by Blake Dempsey. Kindersley would answer back just over two minutes later, as Jake Gerbner beat Carter Phair.

Rothenburger would then score his first of the night 90 seconds later, set up by COle Woodliffe and Ben Hiltz. From there, the game would take a nasty turn for a spell.

Klippers defenseman Josh Patrician ran Phair in the crease, leading to a scrum behind the Weyburn net. Phair left the game for precautionary reasons, while Patrician was given five minutes for charging and a game misconduct. The Wings sent in rookie Jake MacLennan to play out the game.

The Klippers, facing a five minute penalty kill, proceeded to take another penalty, when Brody Ryberg took a penalty for high sticking, getting his stick up on Weyburn forward Ty Brown. It would be just 30 seconds later, when Wagner would get called for slashing. This put the Wings onto a 5-on-3 advantage for nearly four minutes, and ended up having a power play for seven minutes. The Klippers stood tall, and would build from the momentum of killing off all the penalties.

Josh Fletcher would beat MacLennan with just under 2:30 on the clock in the second period, tying the game back up at three. Kindersley wasn’t done with the scoring, though.

Early in the third, the Klippers took the lead, when Cam Shorrock put a shot past MacLennan from a sharp angle, finding a hold in the frame of the Wings goalie no bigger than the puck itself.

Kindersley’s lead would be short lived, as would their chances of extending their post-season beyond the game.

Carson Rose once again was sprung free on a breakaway, this time thanks to a feed from Dempsey. Braden Mellon joined the rush, and with Kindersley defenseman Clive Rozdeba looking to block the pass, and Trenciansky expecting pass as well, Rose was able to find the twine for his second of the night, and third of the playoffs.

Just after the halfway mark of the period, Red Wings captain Mike Eskra was called for roughing, giving the Klippers a power-play, and chance to regain the lead. Ian Parker, the veteran forward for the Wings, broke up a play in the neutral zone, and rushed after the puck. He picked it up, and pulled two defenders over to him, while Rothenburger came in on the right wing. Parker completed the pass through the slot, and Rothenburger pulled Trenciansky out of position, and slid the puck in to give Weyburn the lead.

From there, the Klippers put as much pressure as they could to find the equalizer. With 1:40 left in the third, they pulled Trenciansky in favour of the extra attacker. With the net empty, Carson Rose would bring the puck up into the neutral zone, and carry it in. He found an open Braden Mellon, who fired it from the top of the right wing circle into the open cage.

The Wings will now have a few days off, before they prepare for the quarterfinals.

Their opponent will be dependent on how the other survivor series between Notre Dame and Melfort plays out. If the Mustangs win, there will be a quarterfinal rematch between Weyburn and Flin Flon. If it is Notre Dame on top, the Wings will travel to the Battlefords to take on the North Stars in the next round of the post-season.
