The Weyburn Red WIngs threw everything they had at Estevan Bruins netminder Nathan Alalouf, but were only able to get two past him, while The Bruins beat Carter Phair three time at the other end, as the Bruins beat the Wings 3-2 at Crescent Point Place.

The Bruins jumped out to an early lead, when Hayden Guilderson put his ninth of the season past Phair. The Bruins would add to the lead just 66 seconds later, when Jake Fletcher ended up getting past the defense, and lifted the puck past Phair. The Wings would respond before the end of the period, though.

A long outlet pass from Carson Rose up into the neutral zone connected with Jake Wozney. He carried the puck into the offensive zone, finding himself on a 2-on-1 with Braden Mellon, Wozney passed it over to Mellon, and slipped it into the net past Alalouf with just over a minute left in the middle frame.

The second period started with an edge, and it boiled over around six minutes into the period. Connor Burk took a breakout pass and came in on Alalouf. He wasn’t able to put it into the net, but ended up in the crease. A scuffle ensued, with nearly everyone on the ice pairing up with someone. In the end, the Red Wings ended up on the power play, after Alalouf received a double minor for roughing, in addition to three other players finding themselves receiving minors.

The chippiness carried over with scrums after nearly every whistle, and players being sent to the penalty box. The rough play was finally settled down after Ben Hiltz and Jake Heerspink were given misconduct penalties later in the period. Before that could happen, the Bruins took the lead. Jason Miller scored hi 21st of the season at the 11:31 mark of the period.

Estevan's Jason Miller scores the game-winning goal The third period saw the Wings come out to try to tie the game, and they were aggressive in the push. It paid off when Erik Olson scored his fifth goal in six games on the power play, with Jake Wozney getting his second assist of the game. The Wings continued to push, but were unable to get another goal past Alalouf.

The Bruins got a two-man advantage with just over two minutes left in the period, when they essentially killed off the penalty for the Wings but keeping the puck moving around the perimeter. The strategy worked for the Bruins, as the Red Wings didn’t push to risk giving up the goal, and the Wings weren’t able to put together a strong push with just seconds remaining.

The game set the stage for the rematch Saturday night, when the Wings head down to Estevan. The game can be heard live on Red Wing Radio, K106, starting with the pregame show at 7:20 p.m., and puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
