With the melt almost finished, it's just about that time of year. It's been a long and harsh off-season for golfers and the new season is just around the corner.

It's now April, which is typically the time when Saskatchewan courses open up for the year. Head Pro at the Weyburn Golf Club, Brett Berkner, has been prepping for the big season and said the course is almost ready to go.

"It's looking okay actually. We had a lot of snow there so it's nice that we got some runoff and the ponds are filling up. The course is coming along nicely, so hopefully, it's not too much longer before we're out golfing," he said.

This, of course, is a monumental year for the WGC as it marks their 100th anniversary. They would love to get golfers out sooner rather than later, but they don't want to rush anything. It's a long season after all.

"Believe me, we want to get open as soon as possible, but we have to let the course dry up a little bit more," Berkner stated. "I know there's some nicer weather coming in the forecast so hopefully, we'll be open soon. But I don't have a specific date yet."

Berkner and a committee have some big plans for the centennial season. First up is a new tournament they're hosting — the 'Par-3 Fundraising Tournament' on May 11. It will be the first event of what promises to be an exciting year.

Stay tuned for more updates as to when the course will officially be open in 2019.
