The Weyburn Red Wings will enter Kindersley Sunday with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five survivor series, after topping the Klippers 3-1 at Crescent Point Place Friday night. Red Wings netminder Carter Phair turned in another stellar performance, stopping 52 of the 53 shots he faced.

Kindersley threatened early in the game to jump out to the lead, with the Wings taking a number of penalties in the first period. Blake Dempsey was called for boarding just 38 seconds into the game, and the Wings then killed off a full 5-on-3 at the five minute mark of the period. Weyburn managed to keep the chances from the Klippers to a minimum, and killed the penalties off.

The Red Wings would be the first to score, when Ian Parker tipped in a point shot from Mike Eskra at the 7:29 mark of the period. The goal came just as a penalty to Klippers forward Brandon Wagner ended, just a second shy of being a power play goal. Rookie Jevon Schwean was also credited with the assist, his second point of the postseason.

It would be more than 20 minutes later before Weyburn would add another goal, once again, coming on the power play. Jacob Wozney put the puck past Nick Trenciansky, starting his second game of the playoffs for Kindersley after recording the loss Thursday night. Carson Rose picked up his first point of the playoffs with the assist, while DOnavon Lumb received the other assist.

Kindersley would finally find a way to solve Phair when Wagner found the twine on the power play. Sam Binfet was credited with the assist on the goal. Weyburn wasn’t done with the scoring. Rose scored his first of the playoffs late in the third period. Wozney and Eskra picked up the assists in the game.

The game took a decidedly chippy turn in the third period. In the final frame alone, the two teams combined for a total of 42 minutes, as there was a scrum after most whistles. Referees Al Scott and Marc Dubreuil worked to keep the game under control, and put a stop to most post-whistle shenanigans.

The series will now move to the West Central Events Centre in Kindersley Sunday night for game three. The Wings will be looking to pick up the win, so they can advance to the quarterfinals, where they will most likely have a date with the Battlefords North Stars.

The game Sunday starts at 6:00 p.m. You can catch the pregame show on Red Wing Radio K106 starting with the 5:50 p.m.
