When the Bemidji State University Beavers captured the MacNaughton Cup on February 10th, it was the first time the school had won the WCHA title since joining the conference in 2010.

Helping the NCAA team to the title was a name familiar to Weyburn hockey fans: Carter Struthers.

Struthers joined the Beavers after his final season with the Weyburn Red Wings in 2012-13. The defenseman, who played 79 games with the Red Wings over two seasons, saw action in seven games as a freshman. He then missed his sophomore season due to an injury, and then didn’t play in his junior year. Now a senior in the program, has been a stalwart along the blueline.

The Beavers close out the regular season this coming weekend, with a pair of games against Minnesota State. From there, the conference playoffs take place, with the winner off to the NCAA regionals.
