The baseball season is right around the corner, but the weather hasn’t been too conducive to letting the teams get out onto the field for practice. With temperatures consistently hovering around freezing, and snow still on the ground, diamonds across the southeast have been fairly quiet so far this month. Except for one.

The Southeast Midget AAA Twins have been getting out onto the field despite the less than ideal conditions, as they prepare for their season which begins on May 5th.

“Why not give it a shot, and see what we can do out in the field,” said Blaine Kovach, the head coach of the Twins. The team was on the diamond Monday in Estevan, getting in an outdoor practice. “It’s much better feeling to be on the diamond, even if it’s a little wet and there’s a few snowbanks here and there.”

The Twins are coming off a tough season, finishing 13-17, 11 games back of the Saskatoon Diamondbacks. With a number of players graduating out of the program, it means there will be a fairly young team for the Twins this season.

“It’s not a bad thing in my mind at all. These are the guys you want to help build the program, and help instill in them what we want for our program,” Kovach added.

The first games of the season for the Twins will be on May 6th. They host the Saskatoon Diamondbacks at Lynn Prime Park in Estevan for a double-header. A number of the games for the Twins will also be played in Weyburn, although those exact dates have not been set as of yet.

There is quite a bit of Weyburn talent on the team this year as well. Kovach said he is looking forward to seeing what Jayke Smolinski, Hudson Neuberger, Ty Nikolejsin, and Rhett and Aidan Krafchuk bring to the table this year, after having very strong bantam careers.

Until then, the Twins will continue practicing, no matter the conditions.
