The Flin Flon Bombers entered SJHL quarterfinal action Wednesday night on the brink of elimination, down 3-0 in their best-of-seven series with the Battlefords North Stars. In Yorkton, the top-seeded Nipawin Hawks were looking to pull even with the Yorkton Terriers in their series, as Yorkton is up 2-1.

For Flin Flon, they would need overtime to get the job done, but they remained alive, beating the North Stars 2-1. It was the third game of the series to go to extra time.

The Battlefords took the lead in the second period with a goal from Garrett Johnson. In the third, the Bombers tied it up as Caleb Moretz found the back of the net early in the period.

In overtime, it would be Flin Flon’s leading scorer, Brandson Hein, who would pot the game-winning goal, forcing the series back to North Battleford.

Game five in the series will be played Friday night.

In Yorkton, the Terriers were looking to continue their strong play, having won the previous two games against Nipawin.

Yorkton jumped out to an early lead, going up 3-0 in the first period on goals from Mason Mullaney, Chantz Petruic and Quinten Hobbs. It was enough to chase Nipawin goalie Declan Hobbs from the crease, with Patrick Pugliese coming in to finish the game.

Nipawin would score before the first period was over, as Walker Cote beat Ryan Ouellette with just minutes remaining.

In the second, the three-goal lead for the Terriers was restored as Colby Brandt scored his fourth of the playoffs.

Nipawin again cut the lead to two goals as Josh Lester scored early in the third period. The Hawks then threw everything they had at Yorkton, putting up 14 shots on goal in the period. Ouellette, though, would stand tall, and Brandt added an empty-net goal in the dying minutes to secure the win.

The series now returns to Nipawin for game five, with the regular season pennant winners down 3-1 in the best of seven series.
