It wasn’t the end of the season the Weyburn Beavers were hoping for. In a thrilling game at Tom Laing Park, which went down to the last Beavers batter, the Regina Red Sox pulled off the upset, winning 7-6, and taking the best-of-five WMBL East Division final 3-2.

The game saw the Red Sox hit three home runs, the Beavers hit two double, and both teams putting forth strong pitching performances. There was even controversy to the final score, with many fans in attendance at Tom Lain Park finding issue with the call of a balk against Weyburn pitcher Chandler Casey in the 5th inning.

The call, made by third base umpire Huck Craig, had Beavers head coach Phil Curtis storming from the dugout, and took the Regina Red Sox by surprise as well. Cooler heads did prevail, with Curtis returning to the dugout, but the fans in attendance then heaped the discontent with the call on the umpires for the rest of the game.

The call also resulted in a tiebreaking run crossing the plate, and the single run proved to be the difference in the game.

The Beavers were the first to get on the board in the game when Anthony Galindo drove in Cory Ewald with a single to left field in the second inning.

The Red Sox were quick to reply, as Adam De La Cruz hit a three-run home run in the top of the third, giving Regina the 3-1 lead. Weyburn wasn't done yet, though.

The Beavers began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the third, starting with Corey Wheaton crossing the plate on a passed ball. In the bottom of the fourth, Tyler Scott tied the game up with an RBI single which brought home Ewald.

After the Red Sox took the lead in the fifth with the balk, they added to it with two home runs on the sixth. Matt DeNeau hit a two-run blast, which was followed up by a solo shot from Brooks Stotler.

Trailing by four, the Beavers were determined to get back into the game. An error by Regina shortstop Danny Hunt allowed Corey Wheaton to cross home plate in the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, Weyburn put together a rally and scored two more runs. Keaton Greenwalt was walked with the bases loaded. Wade Weinberger then hit a long sacrifice fly ball to centre, bringing in Anthony Galindo.

In the bottom of the ninth, though, the Beavers were unable to get the game-tying run across the plate.

On the mound, Chandler Casey was tagged with the loss, He went six innings, striking out five, while giving up six runs. Dalton Ross pitched 1 ⅔ innings in relief, striking out three. Eri Evans finished the game for the Beavers, with 1 ⅓ innings of work, and a strikeout.

For the Red Sox, they now are off to Medicine Hat. They play the Mavericks for the WMBL title starting Sunday night.
