It's been eight years since the Saskatchewan Roughriders won a game at McMahon Stadium.

In fact, the Calgary Stampeders have been so dominant at home, that they haven't lost a game there since 2015.

The Riders are looking to change all that this week as they make their way to Calgary for a Week 5 meeting with the Stamps on Saturday night.

“It would be a big character win,” said Quarterback Kevin Glenn. “For us to go on the road, against a very good team that hasn't lost at home in a while, so the thing we have to do is come out and match their intensity, they're coming off a loss in Montreal so they're looking to get back on track.”

Calgary lost 30-23 to the Montreal Alouettes last week, while the Riders sat back on their bye week and enjoyed their first win of the 2017 season after beating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 37-20, in Week 3.

The team knows what a win at McMahon would mean for the franchise, which has struggled for the past two seasons, but they also know that it won't come easy.

“In terms of the league as a whole, it will open a lot of eyes to what we're doing here in Riderville,” said Offensive Lineman Derek Dennis. “If we beat them, it's going to put everybody on notice and we're just going in there and looking to wreck the party.”

The rivalry between the Riders and Stamps has always been intense, but the addition of Dennis in the offseason has added another dimension to the rivalry between the two side.

Last season, Dennis won the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award while helping Calgary to a 15-2-1 record. He decided to join the revamped Riders o-line during the offseason, a move which saw a big reaction from Stamps' players and fans on social media.

Dennis said he's excited to face his former teammates.

“I'm just trying to control my emotions because I know that I'm going to be juiced up to be playing those guys, practicing against them for two years, I get a chance to do it for real now,” said Dennis. “I understand the magnitude of what's happening this week.”

It's going to take more than some extra motivation from a few players for the Riders to come out on top in Calgary.

The Stampeders' success comes in their ability to beat teams in a number of different ways, whether it's with Jerome Messam on the ground, Bo-Levi Mitchell through the air, or with a strong defence.

“They've got a tremendous coaching staff, first of all, they've been able to weather all the injuries that they've had because they're well coached, they're well prepared in their personnel department and you win games with good players, there's a great receiving core, a tremendous defence and a lot of players that have been there a long time and are use to winning,” said Head Coach Chris Jones.

One of the showdowns to watch within the game will be Messam going up against fellow Canadian in Riders' middle linebacker Henoc Muamba. It's not too often that you see two Canadians squaring off in those two positions.

Muamba said he's looking forward to going against Messam, but it won't be doing it alone.

“We've had our battles over the years, he's won a few and I've won a few,” said Muamba. “He's a good back, we know that, but we're prepared and excited about this week.

“We pride ourselves on our athleticism and our speed and it's never going to be a one-on-one thing, if it's a one-on-one with me and Messam, I like my chances, but for the whole defence, we never want to make it one-on-one.”

The Riders' offence comes into this week leading the league in a number of key statistics like time of possession and second down conversions. Keeping that success going is going to be key going into McMahon.

“Any given day, any team can win and we've seen that so far this year,” said Glenn. “A lot of points have been scored, it's been exciting and I look forward to it being the same this week.”

The Riders and Stamps hit the field at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
