With a series of scrimmages, and off-ice testing, the Weyburn Red WIngs kicked off the 2017 training camp Saturday. The 61 players featured a number of returning faces, such as captain Mike Eskra, a number of defesemen such as Carson Scheschuk, Dylan McCabe and Devon Becker, as well as forwards Landon Walters, Ben Hiltz and Cole Woodliffe. The goaltenders were also stocked, with eight talented netminders in attendance, including returnees Carter Phair, Jake MacLennan and Cody Levesque.

The speed and tempo of the on-ice scrimmages hasn’t been lost on Eskra.

“Usually camp, you’ve got a lot of young guys, it can be a little slower, but there’s been some fast paced hockey,” Eskra said after the final session of the day Saturday. He also pointed out the shape everyone reported in looks to be really good, and the veterans are playing well.

Training camp resumes Saturday with practices for all four squads. It finishes up with the final two scrimmages in the evening. Camp itself wraps up with the Red and White Game Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
