The Weyburn Red Wings erased a second period, two-goal deficit in 90 seconds as they beat the Melville Millionaires 4-3 Saturday night. The win ended a three-game winless skid for Weyburn, as they extended their lead for first in the Viterra Division.

The rookies were the highlight of the game for the Red Wings, as Jordan Kazymyra scored a goal and added two assists, Cade Kowalski scored the game-winner, and William Cruise scored in his first game with the team. In net, Carter Phair stopped twenty shots for the win.

The Millionaires scored first when Isaac Embree notched his first in a Melville jersey 12:31 into the first period. The Millionaires would extend the lead after a turnover in the first half of the second period. Damian Bentz took advantage of the miscue and had all the time in the world to pick the spot to beat Phair.

Then, Weyburn took over the play in the period. It started when Cruise scored his first with just under five minutes left in the second. 90 seconds later, Kazymyra scored his fifth of the season, tying the game up at 2-2.

Weyburn took the lead in the third period when a point shot by Erik Olson was redirected by Jeremy Velazquez past Colby Entz. The seventh goal of the season by the Joliet, Illinois native was also assisted by Kazymyra.

Less than a minute later, though, Melville evened the game back up. Bentz scored his second of the night. The Millionaires then started buzzing, the momentum buoyed by the goal. Phair would keep the puck out of the next, and Weyburn slowly regained the momentum. It paid off in the final minute.

Cade Kowalski scored his sixth of the season, assisted by Kazymyra and captain Mike Eskra with just 38 seconds left in the game.

“It was just sort of a relief,” Kowalski said of his goal. “I had a couple of chances early on in the game that should have gone in, definitely, and it's just a relief to get the puck to go in the net.” He had hit the post three times during the game, as did a number of players on the Red Wings roster.

Melville pulled Entz in favor of the extra attacker, but the Red Wings kept the puck out of harm’s way for the remainder of the game.

The Red Wings outshot Melville 36 to 23 in the game and dominated the play for much of the game.

“It was one of our better efforts,” head coach Wes Rudy said after the game. “I thought the guys played with some intensity and jam.”

He also had good things to say about the contingent of rookies for the Wings, who accounted for three of the four goals on the night.

“We got a good bunch of rookies here,” Rudy added.

The Red Wings now prepare for their second road trip in three weeks. They are off to Kindersley and the Battlefords for three games in three nights starting Thursday.
