The Weyburn Red Wings will kick off a busy week of hockey Saturday morning when training camp starts. The camp will begin with the registration at 9:00 a.m. Players then get ready for the fitness training and will be split into four squads for a number of scrimmages and practices over two days.

Red Wings head coach Wes Rudy is introducing the practices as a new way to help evaluate the players who are looking to wear the red and white of the Wings this season.

“We’re going to have our scrimmages and then we’re also going to run some practices just to see how kids can run through drills and think through drills, and it gives our scouts a chance to look at different aspects of their game,” Rudy explained.

The scrimmages will culminate Monday afternoon with the annual Red and White game. The game, which starts at 3:00 p.m., will see the players face off against each other in what is the first real look at the squad for fans. This year, Voice of the Red Wings Steven Wilson will be behind one bench as the guest coach, while CTV’s Darrell Romuld will be behind the other.

After the Red & White game, the coaches, scouts, and management will make some tough decisions, before the team turns around and begins the preseason schedule the next night.

This year, the Red Wings will be playing four games in five nights, starting Tuesday when the Red Wings host the Notre Dame Hounds. Wednesday, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines from the MJHL will visit Crescent Point Place. Thursday will be an off day for the Red Wings.

Friday, they travel to Estevan to play the Bruins, and cap off the preseason with a game against the Bruins at home on September 9th.
