The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings jumped out to an early lead against the Estevan Bruins, but a pair of power-play goals in the second period helped Estevan to rally back, and then some, as they beat the Wings 5-1 Friday night.

"We had a solid start like we talked before," said assistant coach Nathan Deck after the game. "We did all the little things we needed to do, and then we just kind of fell apart after that."

As it has been in many previous games, penalties were an issue for the Red Wings, as they gave up six power plays in the game, and the Bruins capitalized on three of them. Surprisingly, the Estevan Bruins only had one player penalized all game, and that was when a fight broke out late in the third period between Matt Millette of the Bruins and Weyburn's Davis Chorney.

"In the end, we've got to stay out of the box," Deck added. "You can't win games when you are in the penalty box."

The Wings opened the scoring in the first period when Braden Birnie sniped his third of the season over the shoulder of Estevan goalie Boston Bilous. The tally, which came at the 9:02 mark of the first, was assisted by Cayde Augustine and Jackson Hassman. Just moments before that goal, however, the Bruins had thought they had taken the lead, but the goal was waved off after being ruled it was scored by a high stick.

Estevan would tie things up early in the second period, as Olivier Pouliot scored just 1:42 into the middle frame. Then, at the 6:15 mark, Alex Von Sprecken added his first of the year on the power play to give Estevan the edge. Before the end of the period, Keagon Little scored his first of the season on the power play with 5:34 on the clock, then Griffin Asham-Moroz beat starting goalie Joseph Young with 4:05 to play in the second.

Asham-Moroz would then round out the scoring in the third, as he scored another power play goal.

The Red Wings will now be away from game action over the Thanksgiving long weekend. They will still have practice, with skates scheduled for Saturday and Monday. The team will then head up to Melville on Tuesday to take on the Millionaires.
