The Weyburn Red Wings picked up their first win of 2018 Friday night, as they held off the Humboldt Broncos for a 3-2 win. Ty Brown scored twice in the victory, with Cade Kowalski assisting on all three Red Wings goals. Liam McCloskey, in his first start for the Red Wings, earned the win.

The Wings were the first to get on the board, thanks to a power play late in the first period. Brown fired the puck past Broncos goalie Parker Tobin for his 11th tally of the season. Kowalski and Mike Eskra assisted on the goal.

The lead wouldn’t last long into the second period. Jaxon Joseph scored his 16th of the year, as he beat Liam McCloskey just 43 seconds into the frame.

The tie would stay in place until close to the halfway mark of the period. Brown scored his second of the night, assisted by Kowalski and Ben Hiltz, giving Weyburn the 2-1 edge. The lead wouldn’t survive the minute, though, as AP call up Zach McIntyre came in on a breakaway, and beat McCloskey just 45 seconds later.

The Wings would regain the lead early in the third period. A shot from Kowalski beat Tobin but looked like it would stall against the far left goalpost. Ben Hiltz was right there to tap it in, giving Weyburn a 3-2 edge. Eskra earned the other assist on the goal.

With the win, the Wings are now four points back of the Estevan Bruins for first in the Viterra Division, and still, have two games in hand. They will look to further close the gap tonight when they host the Melfort Mustangs at Crescent Point Place. The puck drops on the game at 7:30 p.m.
