The Weyburn Red Wings bounced back from their northern road trip with a win Wednesday night. Ben Hiltz scored twice, and Erik Olson and Ty Brown added singles, as the Wings picked up a 4-2 victory over the Millionaires in Melville. The win moves Weyburn to just one point back of the Estevan Bruins for first in the Viterra Division.

Brown started the scoring off just two minutes into the game. With an early powerplay opportunity, he redirected a point shot from Mike Eskra past Melville goalie Connor Dochuk.

“We haven’t had that much success here, so it’s nice to come in and show a dominant performance,” said Brown.

It would end up being a short night for Dochuk, as he was pulled ten minutes later, when Hiltz scored his first of the night, with the assist going to Carson Scheschuk.

Hiltz was playing in his first game since the selection camp for Canada West for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge. Hiltz was returned to the Red Wings Tuesday, after missing the final cut.

“Some unfortunate news trying out for Team Canada West there, but happy to get the win, and happy to help the boys get the win,” Hiltz said after the game.

The Millionaires got on the board in the second period on a goal Red Wings fans in attendance, along with Red Wings goalie Arik Weersink, thought shouldn’t have necessarily counted.

The puck was at the top of the Red Wings crease, and Weersink covered it up with his blocker. Melville forward Isaac Embree proceeded to push the puck, along with Weersink’s blocker and stick, into the net behind Weersink, and the referees counted the goal, despite protestations from Weersink, and members of the Red Wings.

Weyburn didn’t let the goal keep them down, though. With a power play to start the third period, Erik Olson continued his torrid pace from the blue line. He fired home a feed through the slot from Cade Kowalski just 31 seconds into the third. The goal would prove to be the game-winner.

Melville would reduce the deficit to just one goal moments later. Clayton Eisler took advantage of a screen in front of Weersink to beat him over the right shoulder, making it 3-2.

Hiltz would restore the two-goal lead just moments later, with his second of the night. Cade Kowalski was credited with the assist, his second point of the evening.

The Wings will now prepare for the Kindersley Klippers, who are in town for a pair of games beginning Friday night. The Wings have yet to defeat the Klippers this season in three previous meetings. They are the only team Weyburn has yet to record a win over so far this year.
