The Midget A Radville Nationals improving to 4-2-2 on the season after picking up a 4-2 victory over the Weyburn Midget A Barber Motors Silverado Wings Wednesday night. With the two points, the Nationals moved into sole possession of second in the MMMHL.

The tight checking game saw both teams test the goaltenders in the first period, but neither would give up a goal. Owen Petersen stopped numerous shots for the Wings, while Jaxon Christopherson was solid for the Nationals.

It wouldn’t be until the second period when anyone was able to score, and it would be Radville opening up first.

Just 4:22 into the second period, Zac Bolton was able to get the puck past Petersen. He was assisted by Radville captain Cole Zeig on the tally. Radville would then add to the lead just past the halfway mark of the period when Zeig scored a goal of his own.

The Wings would get on the board in dramatic fashion in the third period. While short-handed, Trey Sandiford broke into the Radville zone on a breakaway and was hauled down. The referee signalled for a penalty shot, which Sandiford made good on, making it a 2-1 game.

Radville would restore the two-goal lead moments later when Conor Henheffer beat Petersen. The goal was assisted by Cooper Meston and Layton Krauss.

Weyburn wasn’t finished, though. Sandiford would score his second goal of the game, this time on the power play, with 3:01 remaining in the third period, closing the deficit to just a goal. The assists on the goal went to Austin Yeik and Rubin Bobier.

With a minute left in regulation, the Wings pulled the goalie in favour of the extra attacker. The gamble wouldn’t pay off, though, as the Nationals would send the puck down the ice into the empty cage. Sage Moule was the goal scorer, and the assist went to Christopherson.

The Nationals are back in action on Friday when they host Carlyle. The Wings will be on the ice on Sunday when the Estevan Bears are in town.
