The Midget AAA Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings were in Winnipeg on the weekend, taking part in Hockey Manitoba’s Midget AAA Challenge. They would wrap up the busy weekend of hockey with a 2-2 record.

The action started Friday, against the Winnipeg Ice. The Ice would skate to a 6-1 win to open the tournament.

Winnipeg would come out firing and built took a 1-0 lead with 27 seconds left in the first period. The Ice would then put four more goals in the net in the second period before the Gold Wings were able to answer.

Weyburn’s goal came from Dakota Bowler at the 18:43 mark of the middle frame. She was assisted on the goal by Payton Mabee and Sierra Meroniuk.

Winnipeg would score once more in the third period.

Saturday, the Gold Wings would come out strong to start the day. They jumped out to an early lead, and didn’t look back as they beat the Central Plains Capitals 6-3.

The scoring started in the first period, as Bowler scored her second goal of the weekend. The unassisted tally came with 4:42 remaining in the period.

The second period started off with the Gold Wings adding to their lead. Just 6:29 into the frame, Mahteya Dumelie would score an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later, Mabee would make it a 3-0 lead. Her power play goal was assisted by Nikita Schmidt and Bowler.

Central Plains would then start to rally. They scored once in the second period, then added two more before the halfway mark of the third period to tie the game up 3-3. The Gold Wings were unfazed, though, as they just resumed scoring themselves.

Schmidt would start the rally to regain the lead at the 14:17 mark of the period with an unassisted goal. Mabee then scored her second of the game 52 seconds later, assisted by Meroniuk.

Mia Chretien then added an empty netter with 55 seconds left on the clock, with Kierson Hennes credited with the assist.

Pembina Valley was next on the schedule for the Gold Wings at the Challenge.  The Gold Wings would come away from the game with a 3-1 victory.

The Hawks were the first on the board, with a goal before the game was eight minutes old. Weyburn would quickly reply, though. Madison LaFoy notched her first goal of the weekend with 8:41 gone in the opening frame.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second period, and then the Gold Wings would take the lead in the third.

Dumelie scored her second of the tournament with just under ten minutes left in the game. Her shorthanded goal was unassisted. Then, with just 1:17 left on the clock, Dumelie scored her second of the game to make it 3-1. The tally was assisted by Paige Cox and Sydney Keddie.

The Gold Wings closed out the Challenge on Sunday with a game against the Yellowhead Chiefs. The tightly fought game would see the Chiefs come away with a 2-1 victory.

Weyburn jumped out to a lead late in the first period. Hennes scored on the power play. The goal was assisted by Bowler.

The Chiefs tied the game up in the second period, and then took the lead early in the third. Yellowhead would hold on for the win.

The Gold Wings split their goaltending duties between Daneka Dickson and Amara Lewendon over the weekend. Dickson would go 1-1, allowing seven goals in the two games. Lewendon was also 1-1, allowing three goals over the course of two games.

The Gold Wings will be back in action on Saturday as they resume league play. They will be visiting the Notre Dame Hounds for a matinee, before hosting the Hounds the following afternoon at Crescent Point Place.
