The streak is over the Yellow Grass Junior C Wheat Kings. Saturday night, they suffered their first loss of the season in the QVHL, falling 10-5 to the Wolseley Mustangs on the road. It was the first meeting of the season between the two teams since the league semifinals last season.

The Mustangs came out firing, with Brandon Shiels scoring the first goal of the game just 1:19 into the first period. The pressure kept up, with Braedyn Wozniak making it a 2-0 game before the halfway mark. Cam Maier then scored his first of three on the might with 6:54 remaining in the period.

The Wheat Kings would respond before the period was out. Jaxon Guest found the twine with 3:57 remaining. His goal was assisted by Austin McCann and Austin Gerle.

Guest would then open the scoring in the second period to close the gap to 3-2. His goal at the 5:17 mark of the middle frame was assisted by Rhett Moule.

The Mustangs looked to restore the lead to two goals and did just seconds later. Tristan Holbrow made it 4-2 at the 5:54 mark of the period. A power play marker from Tyler Krauser then made it 5-2.

Yellow Grass wasn’t finished, though. Judson Christopherson scored with 8:36 remaining in the period. Connor Lafoy and Walker Whitrow assisted on the score.

Just over a minute later, Wolseley restored the lead to three goals. Tanner Baran would score on Graham Schmidt. Dustin Coderre then added to the lead a minute later, making it 7-3 Wolseley.

The Wheat Kings would get another goal, this time from Lafoy, a minute after Coderre scored, the two teams combining for three goals in a span of two minutes. Christopherson and Gerle assisted on the Lafoy goal.

Yellow Grass added one more before the period was over to pull within two. Gerle notched a goal of his own, with Trey Culbert assisting.

In the third period, it would be all Wolseley, as they continued to build on the lead. Holbrow scored his second of the game with 12:42 remaining. Maier then finished off the hat trick with goals at the 10:00 mark, and with 2:49 remaining in the game.

With the Wolseley win, the Wheat Kings are now tied with the Mustangs for 1st overall in the QVHL. Both teams are sporting identical 8-1 records. Just one of the teams will be in first place heading into the Christmas break, however. They meet again Saturday, this time in Yellow Grass.
