The Toronto Blue Jays had their bats come alive Tuesday night against the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, the it wasn’t enough to get them out of the season opening slump, as they fell 8-7 to the Red Sox.

Russell Martin, Justin Smoak and Ezequiel Carrera all went yard for the Jays, who were playing their seventh consecutive game at Rogers Centre. The offense wouldn’t be enough to overcome the Red Sox, though, who extended their winning streak to four games.

The Red Sox picked up three runs in the third inning, and added three more in the fifth. Those six runs all came off Toronto starter Marcus Stroman, who was pulled in the top of the fifth. He gave up six earned runs and eleven hits, while walking one, and striking out four.

The Jays did start out hot, taking advantage of the Boston starter. Brian Johnson was called up earlier in the day from AAA Pawtucket, and he had to work to get out of the first inning. The Jays would score twice to start the game off. Smoak and Martin would then homer with solo shots in the third and fifth respectively.

The Red Sox built up to an 8-4 lead heading into the ninth inning, with a homerun from Mookie Betts In the seventh, and a ground rule double from Andrew Benintendi scored Pablo Sandoval in the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Steve Pearce drive in Russell Martin with a single, and then Carrera hit his two-run shot, as the Jays began to rally back. It would end, though, when Devon Travis lined out. The Jays are now 2-11 on the season, and 1-6 at the friendly confines of the Rogers Centre.

Francisco Liriano will get the start Wednesday night when the Jays and Red Sox meet again for the second game of their series. Boston is sending Rick Porcello to the mound. You can catch all the action on Saskatchewan’s Home of Blue Jays Baseball, AM1190, starting at 5:00 p.m.
