A parade to the penalty box eventually did the Red Wings in and they dropped their first home game of the season to the La Ronge Ice Wolves. A final score of 4–2 on Friday night dropped the Wings to 5–3–1 on the season.

Slow starts have been an issue for Weyburn this season and the visiting Ice Wolves took advantage. Just 91 seconds into the game, Zach Bannister redirected a shot past goaltender Cody Levesque, who was making his second start of the season.

His teammates didn’t give him a lot of help in the early going but eventually found their legs. Some great work below the goal line by the Red Wings third line eventually led to Burke Johnstone finding Will Cruise in front — he was stopped by rookie Rhett Frey was there to bang home the rebound. It was the first SJHL goal for the Weyburn product.

La Ronge would grab the lead back before the end of the first period, as Levesque got caught halfway between playing the puck and his net. Peyton Malcolm was the beneficiary and grabbed the loose puck and potted a wraparound for his first goal of the season.

Weyburn actually outshot the Wolves 12–8 through 20 minutes but trailed by a goal. The teams traded chances in the second period but the goalies kept it a 2–1 game. The Wings spent eight minutes of the frame killing off penalties, all for high-sticking.

Cruise and Khale Skinner were both called for the second minor penalties of the night midway through the third period and the Ice Wolves would capitalize. Mitch Zambon would score his team-leading sixth of the year with 10:48 to go in the game and just over two minutes later Malcolm would extend the lead to 4–1.

The best penalty killing team in the league killed off just five of seven chances and dropped down to a rate of 86.4 percent on the season.

The Red Wings tried to spark a late rally and 20-year-old Ty Brown scored a sweet powerplay to cut the lead in half with just over seven minutes. The red and white would keep pressing but it was too little, too late. \

Ice Wolves goalie Merek Pipes was seeing his first action of the season coming off an injury. He was spectacular and stopped 35 of 37 shots. Levesque made 20 saves for Weyburn.

The Wings will have a short turnaround and a chance to redeem themselves tonight on home ice. The Flin Flon Bombers will make their first trip to Crescent Point Place at 7:30.
