Weyburn will be reprsented at the Junior Women’s Provincial Curling Championships later this month. The Emily Haupstein rink advanced after their play at the qualifying spiel in Moose Jaw this past weekend. The Haupstein rink, which curls out of the Weyburn Curling Club, is comprised of Haupstein as skip, third Shayla Moore, second Emma Wiens and lead Abbey Johnson.

Team Haupstein opened the spiel against Team Friesen, out of Wadena. After finding themselves down 2-1 after three ends, the Haupstein rink put up seven in the fourth end, and went on to win 13-3. The win advanced Haupstein to the next round, where they played the Ackerman rink from Moose Jaw.

In the second round match-up, Haupstein went up early, with two in the first end, and then singles in the fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth to round out the scoring. The win over the Ackerman rink advanced Haupstein to the A side finals, and a chance to win a berth in the provincial championships.

In the finals, Team Haupstein found themsleves against Team Kleiter from the Sutherland Club in Saskatoon. Kleiter took the early lead, with a single in the first end. Haupstein replied with two in the third, then a single in the fourth, jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Kleiter would reply with two in the fifth, evening the game back up.

With the hammer in the sixth, though, Haupstein added two more to gain the advantage, and after a single by Kleiter in the seventh, added two more in the ninth. The lead would hold through the final two ends, and the Weyburn rink won the spiel. The Provincial championships will be held at the Callie Club in Regina, from December 27th ot 31st. Haupstein is the second curler from Weyburn to qualify. Travis Tokarz, who now curls out of Saskatoon, qualifed for the provincials in November.
