The Midget AAA Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings were looking to shake some of the rust off, playing their first game in nearly a month Wednesday night. They travelled up to Wilcox to take on the Notre Dame Hounds in their first game of 2019.

It would be the Hounds who came out on top, though, taking advantage of a flurry of goals in the first period to beat the Gold Wings 7-2.

The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead 1:10 into the game when Sophie Young got the puck past Weyburn goaltender Daneka Dickson. The Hounds would add another goal from Olivia Leier just past the five-minute mark of the first period, then Ally Kosteniuk made it 3-0 with 7:12 left to go in the period.

The Gold Wings would get on the board just before the first period ended. Sydney Keddie notched her sixth goal of the season, assisted by Madison Lafoy and Mahteya Dumelie with just 21 seconds left on the clock.

Weyburn came out strong to start the second period, pulling within one before the period was even a minute old. Payton Mabee scored her fourth of the season. The unassisted goal marking her career high in goals in a season.

The Hounds would take things back over, though, using a power-play goal by Kas Kingston at the 7:13 mark to regain the momentum on home ice. Lyndsey Janes then scored two goals back to back, including a power-play marker, before the second period was over.

The Hounds would add one more goal in the third period, as Kosteniuk scored her second of the day.

The Gold Wings are now off until Saturday. They will be hosting the Regina Rebels at Crescent Point Place.
