The Midget AAA Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings were in Winnipeg on the weekend for the Girls United Hockey Challenge. The showcase event featured teams from Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The Gold Wings opened play on Friday against the Interlake Lightning. The Gold Wings jumped out to an early lead in the first period, when Payton Mabee scored, assisted by Madison Lafoy and Katelyn Blair. Interlake would tie the game up in the second, and take the lead in the third before Sierra Meroniuk would tie it up again. Meroniuk’s goal was assisted by Dakota Bowler and Janissa Cooley. The final buzzer would sound, with the score 2-2.

Saturday morning, the Gold Wings found themselves back on the ice, this time against the Eastman Selects. In the first period, Eastman jumped out to the lead, before Jayden Lindholm would even things up again, with the helper from Janna Keisig. Early in the second, the Selects would once again take the lead, before Shaelyn Audette, assisted by Meroniuk and Bowler, would tie the game up at 2-2, which was how the game would end.

In the afternoon Saturday, the Gold Wings took on the Yellowhead Chiefs. The chiefs were all over the Gold Wings in this game, taking advantage of the power play, winning 5-0.

The event wrapped up Sunday, as the Gold Wings skated against Pembina Valley. Neither team was able to score in the first period, but then Weyburn found their offense. Taylor Mantell scored on the power play, assisted by Lindholm and Rachel Pankratz. It was followed up by a Lindholm scoring her second of the weekend. The goal, with the man advantage, was assisted by Lafoy. Pembina Valley would score once in the final period, and the game ended 2-1 for Weyburn.

Next action for the Gold Wings will be on Tuesday when they head up to Regina to take on the Rebels. They return home Sunday when they host the Notre Dame Hounds.
