The Weyburn Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings will be kicking off the 2017-18 season this weekend, as they host the Swift Current Wildcats. The game will see the debut behind the bench for Tom Harrison, who is taking over for Mike Rooney.

The team will be looking to improve on last season, where the Gold Wings went winless, the first time in team history. To get started on that road, the team started the year back in August with an evaluation camp.

“We had 42 kids come out, and out of that we selected a team of 20,” Harrison said. “That include nine new players that are going to be coming to the team, and returning 11, including two goalies.”

The Gold Wings went on the road for a pair of exhibition games in Saskatoon this past weekend, taking on the Battlefords Sharks for a pair of games. The Gold Wings came away from the pair of games with a tie, and a win.

When the Gold Wings take the ice Saturday evening against the Wildcats, there will be a number of local faces on the team, as there have been in years past.

“Rooney, Lafoy, Bowler, Mabee are all local girls that are playing on this team, and we’re really excited to have some representation from the Weyburn area this year,” Harrison explained.

The first game of the weekend is at 7:30 p.m. at Crescent Point Place. The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a matinee match-up.
