When they Weyburn Red Wings (19-13-3-0, 2nd Viterra) take home ice tonight against the Humboldt Broncos (19-12-3-2, 3rd Global Ag Risk Solutions), they will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid, which includes two losses to the Estevan Bruins in the annual Holiday Home and Home. For the Broncos, they will be looking to snap a skid as well, as they have dropped their last three games, all in regulation. The last game for the Broncos, back on December 22nd, when they fell 6-2 to the Melfort Mustangs.

This is the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The first came in the middle of November, a game which saw the Red Wings pick up a 5-2 victory. Dawson Atamanchuk, Ben Hiltz, Erik Olson, Jordan Kazymyra and Ty Brown all scored for the Wings in the game.

The Red Wings will be looking to regain their scoring touch, which seems to have slipped in over the course of the streak. Weyburn has mustered just four goals in their past three games while giving up 12, an uncharacteristic trend for the squad.

In his weekly coach’s show, Red Wings head coach Wes Rudy stressed he is looking for some of the scoring from the veterans on the team. With players like Jordan Kazymyra, Cade Kowalski and Ben Hiltz leading the way, they are having little issue finding scoring from their young guns. The blue line has also been very prolific for the Red Wings, with Mike Eskra and Erik Olson among the top scoring defensemen in the league.

For Humboldt, their goal scoring has come primarily at the hands of Logan Schatz, who leads the way with 51 points on the season. The overall lineup, though, is fairly rounded, with just one skater on the Broncos roster yet to register a goal, and he only has two games played on the season.

Discipline is another major factor in how the game will likely play out. Up until their home game against the Estevan Bruins, the Red Wings were the least penalized team in the league. Now, the Broncos hold that honour, as they have taken just 524 penalty minutes on the season. The Red Wings, though, are sharp on taking advantage of their opponents miscues when it comes to penalties.

Weyburn has the fourth best power play in the league this season, clicking along at 20.4 percent. The Broncos are 10th in the league, with a power play of just 16.7 percent. On the road, it is a little more anemic, at just 12 percent. The Broncos are also apt to give up goals while short-handed on the road this season, stopping the opponent just 80.9 percent of the time. The Wings, with the home crowd behind them, have a conversion of 85.1 percent while shorthanded.

Goaltending is one thing many will be paying close attention to tonight.

For the Red Wings, it is expected Arik Weersink will be getting the start. The 20-year-old from Lethbridge has started 17 straight games for the Wings. Only Colby Entz and Jacob Standen have spent more time in the crease this season. Weersink has had a respectable season so far, with career-highs for GAA (2.90) and save percentage (.911).

At the other end, rookie Jacob Wasserman has carried the bulk load of the work for the Broncos. He comes into the game with the 6th best GAA in the league (2.67). As a rookie, he has played in 23 games this year, winning 12 of them.

The puck drops on the game at 7:30 p.m. at Crescent Point Place.
