It was a brisk afternoon for a run, but the elementary school students didn’t seem to mind. Yesterday after school marked the 10th Annual Weyburn Elementary Mini-Marathon.

Kids from Preschool all the way to Grade 6 took part in the run with various distances for the age groups. The Preschool and Kindergarten student ran 500 meters, the Grade 1s and 2s ran one kilometre, kids in Grade 3 and 4 went for 1.5 kilometres and the oldest runners in Grade 5 and 6 took part in a two-kilometre run.

One of the lead organizers was Tessa Scrupps and she said 238 kids signed up to participate.

“We think it's important that kids get involved and active in the community. Sometimes kids don't have a chance to play the sports that everyone else gets to play, so this is a chance for everybody to have a run. It's about fun and activity. “

The WEMM wasn’t limited to students in Weyburn. All surrounding area schools were invited to participate as well. It was an extra-circular activity that the kids had taken weeks to prepare for, learning about stretching, proper form and how to pace yourself.

Scrupps said it’s a fun event every year and they’re already thinking about next year.

“We're planning to do it again next year, it'll be our 11th year,” she said with a smile.
