The Weyburn Comprehensive Eagles opened the regular season Saturday afternoon when they played host to the Swift Current Colts at Darold Kot Field. The Colts would win the game, the first of the season for both squads, 39-14.

The Eagles were looking to start off the 2017 season strong after a sixth place finish in 2016. The Colts wrapped up 2016 as the runners-up in the league standings, and the playoffs.

Despite the scoreboard favoring the Colts, Eagles head coach Darren Abel wasn’t disappointed in the play of his team.

“Overall we had good effort from the guys,” Abel told Discover Weyburn after the game. He did point out the turnovers were a key factor in the loss, and the team would be working to improve their ball security.

“I thought our defense, for the most part, played pretty darn good. They gave up a few big plays; if we cut those out, I think it’ll be a much better outcome in the future.”

The Eagles found their footing offensively in the second half, scoring the 14 points to start to close the gap against Swift Current.

“It was good the guys never gave up til the end, and those guys played very, very hard,” Abel added. “Had some nice runs from Ryan Hoffman and Chase Fillmore at the end.”

The Eagles now begin to prepare for their next opponent. They travel to Yorkton Friday night.
