The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles found themselves ahead early in their game Tuesday against Moose Jaw Central, but ended up falling 21-3 to the Cyclones.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the game after a scoreless first quarter, when Thomas Goranson hit a 12-yard field goal with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Those would end up being the only points of the game for WCS, as the Cyclones held off the visitors.

Central would score their first points before the first half was over, scoring a touchdown through the air. Just 30 seconds later, a turnover deep in Weyburn territory would set up Central with the chance to score, and they did. The Cyclones took the 14-3 score into the break.

The second half saw both defences coming out strong, with neither team able to score until the midway point of the fourth quarter. Cyclones wideout C.J. Vincent would break a 32-yard run on a third-and-one to put the final points of the game on the board.

Despite the loss, Eagles head coach Darren Abel was pleased with the effort put forward by his team.

“We’re coming off a pair of ugly games where we haven’t really moved the ball at all, so to see our lines pushing Central back a bit, getting some running yards, and out passing game was coming around a little bit, but we’ve got to take that next step and score,” WCS head coach Darren Abel said after the game. “It’s coming. I’m optimistic about the future here.”

Rylan Hoffman led the offense for the Eagles, racking up 132 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Brett Bowler threw for 83 yards in the loss.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday, when they host the Estevan Elecs at Darold Kot Field. The game starts at 1:00 p.m.
