The Saskatchewan Winter Games kicked off in North Battleford Monday, with a number of the athletes representing Team Southeast participating in the first day of action. After the first day of competition across a number of events, Team South East has one gold, two silver, and four bronze, for a total of seven medals.

Alpine Skiing

Mekel Frombach, hailing out of Edenwold, medaled for Team Southeast in the girls under-14 Slalom. The 13-year-old finished in third, and claimed bronze, with a time of 1:49.40.

Sam Penkala from Balgonie captured gold in the boys under-14 slalom, capturing the title with a time of 1:45.59. Glenavon’s Zachary Wozniak was 7th, with a time of 2:05.30.

Curling

Landon Field’s rink from Weyburn, which includes Hunter Labbie, Gregg Wiens and Keegan Woodard, played their opening draws yesterday. In the first draw, they fell to Team South West 9-7. They bounced back for the second game, beating Regina 6-2. They close out the round-robin Tuesday against Parkland Valley.

Gymnastics

The Team Mixed gymnastics events were held Monday. They included Men’s Artistic, Women’s Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline. Team South East finished in 4th, with a combined score of 188.385.

Hockey

The male team from Team South East opened the tournament with a game against Saskatoon. They fell 6-0. They bounced back in the second game of the day, dispatching Team South West 6-2. They close out the round-robin Tuesday afternoon against Rivers West.

Judo

In the Male under 40 kg group, Joey Irwin from Kronau came away with a bronze medal. Sedley’s Trysten Reder won the bronze medal in the female under 53 kg group.

Synchronized Swimming

Team South East had 12 competitors in the figures competition Monday. Estevan’s Nyla Dyck was the top finisher, in 10th place. Behind her was Weyburn’s Savannah Pohl, who was 12th. Gemma Bittman from Estevan was 16th. Marlie Weirauch from Estevan was 18th. Hannah Mantei from Estevan came in 21st, While Weyburn’s Marley Kradovill was 26th. Right behind her in 28th was Weyburn’s Alexis Vandermey and Haley Copeland from Estevan in 29th. Caitlin Graham from Estevan was 35th, Rebecca Duncan from Estevan was 42nd, and Megan Dammann was 45th.

Target Shooting

Lauren Kohl from Montmartre and Kyle Stewart from Indian Head captured the bronze medal in the mixed team air pistol competition. Victoria Stewart from Indian Head finished 7th in the female super final air rifle competition. In the male super final air rifle, it was Kyle Stewart coming up 11th, and Rylan Waffle from Balgonie in 13th.

Weightlifting

Nathan Bertram from White City finished in 8th in the male 50kg group. Tyler Colpitts from Carlyle won the silver medal in the 69 kg male group. Carlyle’s Taris Rae won the bronze in the female 53 kg group.
